When Time Stops
A home movie evening and other stories
Journal: 16 June, 2024, evening.
Times when time seemed to almost stop. A dead stop. Did you ever experience that?
An evening (three hours? two weeks?) of watching home movies of The Nicest Couple In The World’s vacation cruise traveling the canals of Holland. There were locks. Many, many locks. An amazing amount of locks. All of which were faithfully captured, as the boat went up, up, up, up, up, and then down, down, down, down, down. Up, up, up, up, up, and down, down, down, down, down. For the entire evening. Did I mention they were The Nicest Couple In The World? We endured with grace. And it’s still, all these years later, our favorite measuring stick for Slow Time. We crack up, just thinking about it.
My cousin posited the pinnacle of slow time being the wait outside the examination room after he’d defended his dissertation, and I respect that, I do. That might top the 1,231 locks we witnessed.
Christmas Eve night, as a child. That’s right up there at the top of the list.
A CPA exam review course-Becker-was four hours (FOUR STRAIGHT NEVER ENDING HOURS) every Saturday morning of sitting in an auditorium listening to cassette tapes droning on and on about accounting principles, tax, accounting theory, and business law. It was a scholarship and expensive if paid for so I really tried to do it. I lasted three Saturdays. Reader, I already had a Masters in Financial Accounting. I could not bear another minute of that. End of story: I passed the exam anyway.
Slow, slow, slow time. There’s a price elasticity of demand, so maybe there’s a cost elasticity of time. You never know.
I’m sure you have your own stories. We all do. These are just some of mine.
My five thankfuls for today:
-the fresh garden tomatoes, pickles, and pound cake a wonderful friend just brought us. She is an angel.
-good fathers
-people who give me hope and kindred company, as we watch current events unfold
-that there are normative moral principles (do no harm, for one), though not everyone follows them
-the comforts of being at home
